# Prefix

> A prefix is a board's short identifier of up to eight capital letters or digits, such as CIR. Combined with a task's running number, it forms an ID like CIR-142 that you can say out loud and find again.

A prefix makes a board unique in CIRO NOISE. It consists of capital letters and digits, at most eight characters, and sits in front of every task number. The prefix WEB and the number 47 become WEB-47. You can mention an ID like that on the phone, write it in a comment or type it into search.

You set the prefix when you create a board and can change it later in the board settings. It also appears in the board's address, so a shared link shows right away which project it belongs to.

## How prefixes work in CIRO NOISE

CIRO NOISE turns your input into capital letters and strips spaces, accented letters and special characters. A to Z and 0 to 9 are allowed, eight characters at most. Leave the field empty and CIRO NOISE takes the first three letters of the board name, so “Marketing” becomes MAR.

Each prefix exists only once in your organization. If it's already taken, the form tells you right at the field. Another organization can use the same prefix.

Each board counts its own tasks. The first task on WEB is WEB-1, the next WEB-2. A deleted number is never handed out again, so an ID never points to two different tasks.

## An everyday example

A trades business runs three boards: OFF for the office, INS for installation and SRV for customer service. When a fitter calls and says “INS-18 is done”, everyone in the office knows which job he means. When someone writes “see #SRV-7” in a task, CIRO NOISE links to that task and the cross-reference shows up in its history.

## Tips for a good prefix

Short prefixes of two to four letters are easiest to say and type. Pick something everyone connects with the project, such as the first letters of the client's name. If you change the prefix later, every task keeps its number and only the prefix in front changes, so WEB-47 becomes SITE-47.

## Frequently asked questions about Prefix

### How long can a board prefix be?

A prefix in CIRO NOISE has at most eight characters. Capital letters A to Z and digits are allowed, and lowercase letters are capitalized automatically.

### What happens if I don't enter a prefix?

CIRO NOISE builds the prefix from the first three letters of the board name. A board called “Marketing” gets the prefix MAR.

### Can I change a board's prefix later?

Yes, in the board settings. Tasks keep their numbers and only the prefix in front changes, so WEB-47 becomes SITE-47, for example.

### Can two boards share the same prefix?

No. Within one organization in CIRO NOISE every prefix is unique, so an ID like CIR-142 always points to exactly one task.
